Why Strategic Plans Fail—and What Makes Them Succeed

Every year, countless organizations invest time, energy, and resources into building strategic plans. These sessions are often energizing—full of big ideas, future-focused conversations, and ambitious goals. But what happens after the retreat ends? Too often… not much.

The Problem Isn’t the Plan. It’s What Comes After.

Strategic plans rarely fail because they were poorly conceived. They fail because the follow-through breaks down. Leaders return to the whirlwind of day-to-day operations, and while the strategic plan remains important, it quickly becomes eclipsed by what’s urgent. As fires pop up, the attention meant for strategic progress gets diverted. Slowly, the momentum stalls. Priorities fade. And the document that once captured the future becomes another file collecting dust.

That said, it’s not a lack of desire or capability that leads organizations to lose sight of their strategies. It’s often a matter of capacity. Teams are stretched thin. Leaders are managing competing demands. And no one has the mental bandwidth left to prioritize the work that isn’t shouting for immediate attention.

But here’s the irony…it’s often the non-urgent, important work—the strategic initiatives—that would have the greatest impact on the operations progressing. These are the efforts that position organizations for long-term success and prevent reactive firefighting. So what do you do about it?

Intentional Execution: The Missing Link

The key to success isn’t just in building a strategic plan—it’s in building the intentional habits, processes, and accountability needed to KEEP IT ALIVE. Without a system to revisit, reevaluate, and reinforce those strategic goals, even the best-laid plans lose steam. That system is something we’ve found to be the “make or break”. If you are reading this, you are likely looking for a way to keep from having another year of strategic hype that lasts a week or two. Here are some of the first steps we take when working with a client to create sustained momentum in their strategic initiatives:

  • Create a cadence for checking in on your strategic goals
  • This can be weekly, monthly, quarterly—whatever fits, but you must have some review loop built in. Planned moments like this give your team the time to examine how you are doing and make adjustments to ensure the highest importance items are receiving the relative resources and effort.
  • Assign ownership for each initiative—not just high-level accountability, but someone who is responsible for day-to-day progress. Everyone being responsible for an initiative is fairly close to no one being responsible for it. Having a specific owner will help reduce ambiguity, so each team member can focus in their one piece vs. giving unfocused efforts toward all the pieces
  • Break down the work into clear, actionable steps. Big ideas need roadmaps. If the work in your initiatives can’t be reasonably estimated from an effort and/or budget standpoint, you need to dissect it’s parts until you can. This gives better visibility to what is required in each phase and the ability to track whether you are ahead or behind.
  • Celebrate progress and make wins visible. Momentum builds when people see movement. At least once a quarter, you should take the time to recognize what has been accomplished. We find these moments can be a boost of energy to tackle the next layer.
  • Guard the time for strategic work. If it’s always the first thing to go, it’ll never get done. This is no doubt a discipline, but it should be aided by all the other steps given above.

If you take these steps with intention and consistency, I can guarantee you will see increased production from your strategic plans/initiatives.

Closing thoughts and the Advantage of a Partner

In closing, none of the steps for achieving strategic success are complicated, but don’t confuse them as being easy. Resisting the pull of day-to-day operations and having the right talent to manage these initiatives in an effective manner is an art form. Bottomline, there are few who do this well, and it’s one of our biggest value propositions in partnering with organizations.

When we partner with clients, we don’t just help write plans—we help build them into the lifeblood of their organization. Our role isn’t to take over, but to create the space and structure for strategic initiatives to actually come to fruition. And because we’re not embedded in the day-to-day operations, we’re not pulled away by every operational emergency. Our focus stays fixed on the long game and the value in that is tremendous.

If you could complete your strategic initiatives with 2-3x the velocity and never worry if you were on-track/off track because you had a partner dedicated to its progress, what would that be worth? Numbers will vary, but for most, it’s significant. THAT is the value we are talking about! It’s a service we are passionate about and an investment that creates a tangible returns for our clients
